BIO
In a letter to Robert Hooke, another heavy weight in the
history of early modern science, Isaac Newton writes, “If I have seen further
it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Newton is often considered a
bookend for the time period that is called the Scientific Revolution. His
profound ingenuity and attention to detail and the new philosophy makes him a
giant in his own right. Newton was able to take the elements of humanism,
rationalism, and experimental philosophy and combine them into a comprehensive universe. The term universe
is important—it literally implies the singular nature of both earth and
heavenly mechanics and nature law.
Gravity was not just something that explains apples falling on the heads
of men on earth, but explains the mechanics of the rotating and revolving
celestial bodies of the solar system.
